Pregnancy after Age 35…Yes, you can!

Getting pregnant is one of the best things you can ever experience. You should plan a baby at a young age as it is easy to get pregnant and there are the least associated risks. When you are in your 20’s, it is the prime age of having a baby. As you grow older, chances of getting pregnant decrease whereas the risks increase. You have a limited number of eggs in your ovaries. As you advance in age, their viability decreases. Pregnancy after age 35 poses a number of threats to your health as well as your baby’s health. Also, it becomes difficult for you to conceive after 35 years of age. Both male and female fertility declines with age; therefore, chances of having a baby also decrease. You should visit a doctor if you find difficulty in conceiving.

Also, go for prenatal screening if you get pregnant to find out that your baby is all healthy because the risk of congenital birth defects starts increasing after a certain age. Late pregnancies are responsible for stillbirths and miscarriages. Multiple pregnancies are also common after age 35. You may suffer from gestational diabetes and high blood pressure due to the age factor. However, it does not mean that you cannot have a peaceful pregnancy and a healthy baby after age 35. In fact, fertility treatments are available which increases your chances of getting pregnant and giving birth to a healthy baby.

How to Increase the Chances of Getting Pregnant:

Visit your health care provider to learn how you can increase the chances of pregnancy. Following are some points which will help you conceive:
– Go for a complete medical check-up, discuss your history, concerns, etc. with your doctor to find out if you are healthy enough to get pregnant.
– Use ovulation tracking applications to find out when you ovulate. Two days before the release of the egg are the most fertile days. Have frequent sex during these days. Apart from these days, sexual intercourse on other days also increases the chances of pregnancy.

Also Read  Second Trimester:

– Avoid stress and tension. Keep yourself relaxed. Thinking so much about pregnancy and stressing over it is of no use. Stress can disturb your menstrual cycle and hence ovulation. You can even miss your periods due to tension. Find yourself ways to alleviate stress and to promote a normal menstrual cycle.

–  Do not assume that you know the exact date of ovulation. Continue having sex as frequently as you can every day. However, it occurs midway between your monthly cycle. Almost 14 days before your next periods. But it is not true for every woman.
– Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Quit tobacco, alcohol and caffeine. Main a healthy weight. Being over or underweight also reduces the chances of pregnancy.

How to Lower the Risks for Pregnancy Problems:

Pregnancy after 35 has some associated risks and health problems. You should consider the following points to lower the risks for these problems and to have a healthy baby:

  1. First of all, go for pre-natal screening to ensure that you have conceived a healthy child. It will make you know if the baby suffers from a congenital birth defect.
  2. Plan regular visits to your health care provider for the monitoring of your and your baby’s health.
  3. Take vitamins, iron, folic acid and other supplements before and during the pregnancy to ensure the healthy development of your baby with no congenital disorder.
  4. A poor diet can also be a cause of pregnancy problems. Follow a healthy diet plan with balanced vitamins, minerals, etc. In fact, you should increase your daily calorie intake by 300 calories to meet the needs of a developing baby.
  5. Lessen your activities. Take rest as your body is going through a lot. Do exercise but avoid strenuous activities which can adversely affect your health.
  6. Do not smoke, drink or use drugs that are banned by FDA. They can harm your developing baby and cause disorders. Alcohol can cause foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).
  7. Exercise regularly as it increases your muscle movement aiding in natural birth. This lowers the risk for stillbirths. As you grow older, muscle stretch decreases causing problems in natural delivery.
  8. Gestational diabetes is common in late pregnancies. Control your blood glucose level and do exercise. Sometimes, medicines are also given to lower the risks associated with it.
